What is the best age to start art lessons?

Some of our art students begin their art adventure as early as 4 and 1/2 years old. In order to start their lessons at that young age, it is important that we provide them a free evaluation class to determine if they are ready for their art lesson. We look for three main abilities:

  • Concentration
    • Are they able to concentrate for an hours worth of time and maintain concentration and interest through out? It’s important that every student is able to concentrate throughout the lesson so that their are little disruptions and so that the guardians and students are getting their investments worth.
  • Recollection
    • How is their long term memorization? Are they able to retain their lessons from week to week? Even though they will be strengthening their muscle memory and hand to eye coordination by attending our classes at a young age, it’s also important that they will be able to recall the information that had learnt from the previous class so that they can build upon the last lesson.
  • Behavior
    • Are they well disciplined? Will they disrupt the rest of the class? As children age they can manage their feelings better but often at a young age they are still dealing with emotional control. Kids mature quickly so if they are not ready yet, it could be a matter of weeks till they are. A follow up free evaluation class is available if we both determine that they need a little more time.

We recommend scheduling and taking the free trial class we offer to you so that we can evaluate and determine if your child is ready for art classes. Our studio directors will  let you know if they are ready to start or if they should have another free evaluation class in three months time.

It is in everyone’s interest to make sure that each child is ready to attend the art lessons at our studio since we must make sure that the classes are efficient, effective and harmonious for each of our art students and our art teachers.

What are the art teacher's curriculums like?

Each of our art teachers utilizes the Oam Studios Art Curriculum that was designed by Artist Omar Morineau. By having our standardized curriculum our students can have a beneficial experience and enjoy the same excitement of learning art that only Oam Studios provides.

  • Fairness & Equity
    • Our art curriculum was designed to build upon itself from the foundations of art in a systematic and comprehensive manner. Our standardized curriculum ensures that all students have access to the same learning opportunities and are held to the same standards. This promotes fairness and equity in education, as students from different backgrounds or taught by different teachers are not disadvantaged by variations in instruction.
  • Consistency
    • Each student can traverse seamlessly from one teacher to another if their schedule changes. When all teachers follow the same curriculum, students receive consistent instruction regardless of who is teaching the class. This consistency helps students understand what is expected of them and reduces confusion about course content and objectives.
  • Collaboration and Support
    • Our art teachers can collaborate more effectively when they share a common curriculum. They can share resources, strategies, and best practices, which can lead to improved teaching methods and better outcomes for students. Additionally, teachers can provide mutual support and assistance when implementing the curriculum, fostering a culture of collaboration within the school community.

With our standardized curriculum our students are also able to participate in earning rewards and trophies equally. This helps create a fun and exciting art experience unique to Oam Studios art students.

What is the art teacher to art student ratio?

Maintaining small sized art classes at Oam Studios offers several benefits to our students and faculty that make it possible to provide the best art lessons:

  • Individualized Attention
    • With fewer students in the class, teachers can provide more personalized attention to each student. This allows for tailored feedback, guidance, and support, fostering greater artistic development and growth.
  • Increased Engagement
    • Smaller classes create a more intimate and interactive learning environment. Students are more likely to actively participate in discussions, ask questions, and engage in hands-on activities when they feel comfortable and supported in a smaller group setting.
  • Enhanced Collaboration and Community
    •  Small art classes often foster a strong sense of community and collaboration among students. With fewer peers, students have more opportunities to collaborate, share ideas, and learn from one another, creating a supportive and enriching artistic community.

The class ratios are determined by the age of the students since younger students need more immediate attention and older students are more able to focus longer and contribute to the class by helping others out. Ages 4 – 8  enjoy a  1:5 teacher to student ratio. Ages 9 & up interact in a 1:10 teacher to student ratio

Summer art camps 2024 now available! We have been a trusted art school, teaching art classes to our art students ranging in ages from 4 -17  K-12, for nearly 15 years now in the SF Bay Area. We strive continuously to be the best art school in the cities of  Pleasanton, Tracy & now the world with our online art classes and Kenya Outreach Program. we truly appreciate you visiting us at our site.

What is the best age to start art lessons?

We have students that start their art adventure as young as 4 and 1/2 years old, but since they are the exception to the rule we want to make sure that they meet some criteria. If your child meets the criterion below then they maybe ready to start art classes:

  • They can concentrate for an hour.
  • They are able to retain their lessons.
  • They can behave during the extent of the class.

We recommend scheduling the free trial class to evaluate if they are ready for art classes. Our studio directors will  let you know if they are ready to start or should have another free evaluation class in three months time.

DONATING MONEY, ARTWORK, TIME, & TALENT

Daily I tell those that I encounter, “Create a beautiful day.” After all, your life is your canvas and your actions are the brushstrokes. We all have the ability to make life more beautiful. Art has certainly taught me that with very little, you can easily make life more beautiful; with just an artistic touch.

When I was attending college in San Jose State, I was homeless for a period of time and lived in an old dilapidated warehouse. It was an abandoned cannery next to the train tracks off 5th street where I found shelter and niched out a small art studio that I worked daily in for two years. I found within me the deepest form of  happiness during those days, because my days were filled with the opportunity of creating beauty with the very little that I had. Art can  teach us to live more beautiful fulfilled lives.

Oam Studios believes that charity and goodwill sone of our highest priorities. Thats why we make a especially important to us to give back to our local communities and to those in need across the globe in Africa, India and South America to name a few

Taught Individually

Teaching all art students the same project at the same time is a big hinderance to both the most talented students as well as those that need more specific assistance. Thats why we teach all students individually, and still allow them the healing socialization of group lessons.

Mathematics & Art

We are so successful at teaching our students visual art because we know that Math and Art are closely related. Geometry is maths visual art and we use it constantly at our studio so that students understand that accuracy in art is all about measuring and angles.

Teaching Creativity

Creativity is not just a talent but is an ability innate to humanity that requires proper nurturing. Master Paskewitz had famously said that art is merely organizing chaos and finding the harmony between unlike things.

INDIVDUALLY TAUGHT

Each art student starts at their own level & is taught individually while enjoying a group setting based upon their age.

LEARN ACCURACY

We develop accuracy through the meticulous study of geometry & science to achieve realism

TEACH CREATIVITY

Creativity is nurtured through the expression of differing systems of abstraction at the art school.

AWARDS & COMPETITIONS

Our art teachers have been successful in having our students win many art competitions and many of our art students have enrolled into the top colleges & art schools in the nation because of our college art portfolio preparation program (CAP3). Even if your child is not applying to an art college, many colleges see the value in accepting a supplementary art portfolio with their applications. An art portfolio speaks volumes about the student’s personality, motivations, virtues and qualities.

We thank you for trusting us with your child’s art education and appreciate any and all feedback from our art students and art guardians. Please reach out if you have any questions and concerns. Thank you so much for visiting our site.

A Gratifying & Varied Curriculum

We were founded by Omar Morineau, who has developed a tiered curriculum to meet the needs of your children that we are honored to teach. The curriculum itself is focused on the many disciplines of art and it’s techniques that Master Omar has learnt while studying all over the world. We believe that every type of art influences the other and that one art discipline might speak to one student more than another. Master Omar was taught such a wide variety are arts that he realized that learning about 3D arts such as ceramics and sculpture benefits the art student’s understanding of rendering 2D images whether in dry drawing materials or paints.

Master Omar’s art professor said that a Master Artist has learnt the wide spectrum of art mediums and techniques. Each art medium reacts differently when applied but has similarities to all others. Branching from one art medium to another strengthens the understanding of a developing artist. The techniques can be taught through exercises so that the primary work is not hindered by the students inexperience. With exercises comes confidence and proven ability.
