Eagle Gateway

Hatching Techniques

Hatching is a method of shading using lines either side by side or crossed.

Simple Hatching

In preparation for the hatching techniques you are about to learn, we’ve got to start by getting your creativity soaring and hatch a few ideas from your mind. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket! Think about and sketch a few cartoon characters for your simple hatching project rather than just one. Your teacher will help you refine your ideas and decide which will be best for the project.

Once your sketches are ready to take off, you’ll be applying simple hatching techniques to bring your drawings to life. To master this, you’ll need to complete a series of hatching exercise sheets to understand the technique. Just like an eagle uses its keen vision to spot even the smallest details from high above, you’ll learn to spot where to add simple hatching and what type of hatch lines to apply.

Upon completing your exercise sheets, you’ll be ready to apply these techniques to your sketch. Start with careful consideration and use a pencil first to ensure precision.

Master Oamie’s Thoughts

Funny how simply complicated simple hatching can be to comprehend. Taper those hatchy marks! The habit of speed is key.

Triangulation

Classical drawing, on the other hand, emphasizes the role of mathematics and geometry to significantly improve an artist’s ability to create more accurate drawings. Like the eagle relying on its sharp vision and natural triangulation capabilities to gauge distances and sizes in the vast expanse of the sky, to accurately hunt its prey,

Through a series of exercise sheets, you will learn how to simplify your subject matter into basic geometrical shapes, gauge distances using measurement and triangulation, and like the eagle effortlessly defies gravity almost magically, you’ll discover how to turn geometrical shapes into precision drawings of reality!

Just as the eagle’s vision allows it to assess prey from great heights, you’ll develop the skill to use your pencil to keenly capture dimensions and proportions with accuracy and finesse. With each stroke, you’ll harness the power of classical drawing to reproduce an image of your choosing as faithfully as possible.

Master Oamie’s Thoughts

Drawing requires a lot accuracy, geometry and math. Learn your angles and degrees and you’ll get way more precise. Ever wonder why artist lift their pencils up with an extended arm, then squint with one eye?

Cross Hatching

You will now set flight into the uncharted skies of advanced hatching known as cross hatching, a particular favorite of Artist Oamie.

Cross hatching involves the intricate interplay of two or more layers of hatching at differing angles, creating a mesh-like pattern that produces varying shades of dark and light. This technique is similar to the meticulous construction of an eagle’s nest, where layers of twigs and branches are carefully woven together in a cross-crossing fashion.

Throughout history, master artists have wielded this technique with mastery and finesse. Among them stands Albrecht Durer, hailed as one of the greatest cross-hatchers of all time. Durer’s fine and precise cross-hatched strokes melded seamlessly into imagery, making him the ace of the skies in hatchery. A Master Hatcher.

You will now embark on a series of exercise sheets to refine your developing cross-hatching skills, culminating in the application of these newfound techniques to the precision drawing you created in the previous Soaraptor level. Like birds leaving the nest, you will spread your wings and venture into the world of cross-hatching, ready to explore and create with your newfound skills.

Master Oamie’s Thoughts

Criss cross is gonna make you… hatch! hatch! Try to get your cross hatches to bend with the shape of the object to give it more volume.
