Clay Designs

In preparation for all the fun we will be having with clay, we have to first take the time to design what are projects are going to be. We will design both projects by drawing them out from different perspectives so we can conceptualize our idea in all perspectives. Once we have our design for our bas relief and sphere projects, we’ll be ready to get are hands dirty… I mean muddy… no wait clay-e!

Master Oamie’s Thoughts

The great thing about learning three dimensional arts is how it develops your understanding of space.

Bas Relief Slab

We will be creating a bas-relief carving. What is a bas-relief. A bas-relief is a sculpture carved onto a 2D plane that produces a 3D appearance. It can viewed from all angles with very little distortion. Some of the most recognizable where the baptistry doors of the Duomo in Florence Italy made by the masterful Bernini. Bas-relief are an incredible for of scultpure that allows them to present their artwork still in a 2 dimensoonal format and is a great way to start exploring ceramic sculpture.

Master Oamie’s Thoughts

I know, I know… I made the same mistake. It is pronounced bah-relief not boss-relief. It stems from the Italian phrase basso-relievo which translates to low relief.

Pinch Pot Sphere

Pinching can generally be annoying but in this project we will be creating two pinch pots, then welding them together using slip and scoring. This will ensure tha the two pieces bond together well during the vetrification process. What is vetrification? Oh thats just the silica bonding together into glass during the 2500 degree firing in the kiln. Its what gives clay its strength and durability. Before getting to that though, you will have to sculpt your sphere into something creative by carving onto the surface and through it.

Master Oamie’s Thoughts

The pinch pot sphere that I created in college took nearly 76 hours of work and only 1 second to break.

Coil Pottery

Using long snake like coils of clay, we will build a beautiful vessel designed with a mood and purpose. After constructing it, you will then decorate it using a number of techniques such as slip trailing, bas relief sculpture and glazing. We want to make sure the shape of this vessel reflects its purpose.

Master Oamie’s Thoughts

I still have my first coil pot at the Pleasanton art studio. It is a huge beer mug. If you drank root beer from it, you’d be burping all weekend.
