Oil Intro

Plunge into the depths of the art world with the dolphin as your guide, exploring the unique and captivating qualities of oil painting. Oil painting has been a beloved medium since the Renaissance, celebrated for its slow drying time and exceptional preservation abilities. These qualities allow artists to refine and perfect their work over extended periods.

In this introduction to oil painting, you will learn to create stunning gradients and textures on your exercise canvas, and perhaps even venture into crafting a silhouette landscape or a still life on another canvas.

Just as the dolphin’s sleek body glides effortlessly through the water, oil paints can be manipulated to create a variety of textures, from smooth and glossy surfaces to rough and impasto finishes. Use palette knives, brushes, and even unconventional tools to add dimension and interest to your artwork. Imagine the way light dances on the ocean’s surface and try to replicate that dynamic play of texture on your exercise canvas.

Remember, like the dolphin’s playful and curious nature, oil painting is about exploration and discovery. Don’t be afraid to swim deep into your creative process, experimenting with new techniques and ideas. The beauty of oil painting lies in its versatility and the endless possibilities it offers for artistic expression.

So, grab your brushes, prepare your palette, and let the dolphin guide you through the enchanting waters of oil painting. As you navigate this artistic journey, you’ll uncover the timeless allure of this medium and create works of art that truly capture your vision.

Master Oamie’s Thoughts

Some people complain that oil painting takes too long to dry… but they are just doing it wrong and they need more patience.

DOLPEDO

Painting Preparation

Don’t flip out but its time to learn how to prepare your canvas for oil painting, ensuring a strong foundation for your masterpiece that will never get lost at sea. Guided by our Dolpedo friend and your friendly Oam Art Trainer, you’ll learn how to prepare your canvas, apply gesso, measure and grid your canvas, and transfer your drawing with precision.

Remember, your project will feature a real animal from an actual photo—no worms, snakes, pure white animals or microscopic amoebas allowed! To test your skill, try choosing a furry animal, a feathery one or even a scaly creature. If the animal was more than one texture thats even better! Look for an image with an intriguing background. Maybe one with… yep you guessed it… contrasting textures and a variety of color!

Dolphins are careful navigators of the ocean, using their sonar clicks to guide them with precision in the darkness of the deep sea. This attention to detail is crucial during this stage as you create your grid and transfer your chosen image to it. But let’s not forget that dolphins are also full of silliness and fun. Take your time to ensure your drawing is accurately transferred, as this will serve as the blueprint for your painting but also enjoy the process!

Once your drawing is on the canvas, you’re ready to begin your oil painting journey. With a well-prepared canvas, you’ll find it easier to bring your chosen animal to life, capturing its essence and beauty in every brushstroke.

So, gather your materials, prepare your canvas, and let the dolphin guide you through this foundational stage. As you complete this section, you’ll be well on your way to creating a stunning and realistic animal portrait that showcases your growing skills and artistic vision. With careful planning, you’ll dolphinitely make amazing oil painting

When I use the gridding transfer method, it makes me feel like a submarine captain navigating the deep sea floor using sonar to plot their precise course

Oil Painting Realism

Now that you’ve prepared your canvas and transferred your drawing with precision, it’s time to work on your animal portrait using the vibrant colors of oil paint. Instructed by your Oam Art Trainer, you’ll explore the final steps of oil painting. You’ll “orca-strate” your masterpiece using the correct brushes and mediums.

Just as killer whales use a variety of cunning hunting techniques, you’ll cunningly choose different brushes for various purposes. Use broad, flat brushes for laying down background colors and large areas. Delicate, script line brushes are perfect for adding long, thin brushstrokes, while fan brushes are ideal for fading two different colors smoothly together.

The orca enjoys a variety of saltwater climates, and you might find that you enjoy working with different paint viscosities. Some artists prefer to thin their paint with turpentine for a quicker drying time and more translucent layers, while others opt for linseed oil for a glossy finish and longer drying time. Experiment with different mediums or follow Vermeer’s bone over dry recipe for a painting that will survive for centuries.

Be precise and cunning as you blend colors and build up your layers of paint and make sure you have a killer whale of a time while doing so!

Master Oamie’s Thoughts

Examples of animals with a lot of different visual textures are ostriches, platypi and sea turtles.
