Charcoal Exercises

Grab a stick of willow and a fire-breathing dragon because we are going to have to burn this project down! We’ll need a lot of dragon-burnt wood so that you can learn how to create a charcoal still life drawing. Let your excitement engulf in flames and your creativity soar like a fat dragon as we bravely enter charcoal still life drawing.

Let’s get our hands dirty! Charcoal is an amazing material to work with, created naturally from burnt willow tree branches, dragon’s flaming breath, and by adding a binder such as gum or wax and then compressing the materials with the weight of a dragon’s tail.

At this level, we will draw with charcoal and perfect our shading with its rich black values and subtle smoky whites that only it can achieve. We will begin with a series of exercises focused on basic geometrical shapes before working on a still life drawing that will include objects of different transparencies and opacities. After all, it is safest to remain still and transparent when near a dragon!

Keep your enthusiasm up as you fearlessly take on the fire-breathing dragon level. Let the flames of your creativity burn brightly and guide you as you continue to explore the depths of charcoal drawing. With each stroke and shadow, let your passion and skill grow, transforming your small sparks of ideas into blazing works of art.

Master Oamie’s Thoughts

I find shading by smudging with your fingers extremely fulfilling, just like being a sophisticated caveman.

Now you’ll venture deeper into the darkness of the dragon’s den, where you’ll need to torch up and stop casting doubts on your understanding of light and shadows. Understanding how light interacts with objects is crucial for creating realistic and dynamic drawings. We’ll explore different parts of a shadow, including the core shadow, cast shadow, and the highlights that bring your artwork to life. You’ll be able to mimic the way a shadow is sharper under the brightness of a dragon’s full-throated flame versus the blurred out shadows of a baby dragon’s flicker.

You’ll also learn how to measure from life using triangulation. This technique involves lifting your hand and measuring with your charcoal stick to accurately capture the proportions and perspectives of the objects you’re drawing, just like a hero raises their sword towards an aggressive dragon. By mastering these skills, you’ll be able to create more convincing and compelling still life compositions and become the hero of your art school.

As we study light theory, pay attention to how light and shadow define the form and texture of the objects. Notice the subtle gradations and contrasts that add depth and dimension to your drawings. By practicing on our Oam Exercise Sheets, you’ll become adept at capturing the intricate play of light and shadow, enhancing the realism and impact of your artwork and be prepared to take on the Dragoking.

So, get ready to sharpen your observational skills and embrace the power of light and shadow in your charcoal drawings. With each exercise, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how to manipulate light to create stunning visual effects. Let the journey into light theory illuminate your path to artistic mastery!

Master Oamie’s Thoughts

With the right amount of pressure & time you can turn graphite into a diamond; with the right amount of pressure and time you can turn a piece of paper into a priceless drawing.

DRAGOKING

Still Life Execution

Don’t cry, and by all means, don’t make a peep. Now it’s time to put your newfound skills to the ultimate test by facing the elder dragon. This daunting challenge of creating a captivating still life drawing in charcoal will put all your new skills to the ultimate test. Gather objects like vases, clocks, glass jars, and any other items that inspire you, as if choosing weapons for a battle.

Arrange them thoughtfully, considering their shapes, sizes, and textures to compose a visually engaging scene that will defend you from the dragons claws.

As you begin sketching, focus on capturing the proportions of each object, paying close attention to the interplay of light and shadow. Use the techniques you’ve learned to render the form and texture of each item with precision and nuance. Remember to take your time and work methodically, building up layers of charcoal to create depth and dimension in your drawing, as if fortifying your defenses against the dragon’s fiery breath.

Throughout the process, trust your instincts and let your creativity guide you. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes or take risks, and above all, never hesitate—art is about exploration and expression just as much as it is about slaying dragons.

Once your masterpiece is complete, step back and admire your work, as if surveying the aftermath of a hard-won battle. Reflect on how far you’ve come and celebrate your achievement, knowing that you have faced the dragon and emerged victorious.

I first ventured into making my own charcoal from scratch when i was in middle school.
